Another year, another layoff Posted By: Lyle - Saturday, October 31st 2009 @ 8:44 am | As of yesterday at 5pm, I'm unemployed. Or rather, on a forced leave of absence (called a furlough) because my company can't afford to pay me. Welcome to the world of small startups.
They put us on furlough instead of laying everybody off because there's still some hope that we'll get another round of funding. If that happens, it should be the last time: the company is doing very well. One more round should cover us until we break even and start generating our own profit. It's frustrating because we're so close to being able to stand on our own and heartbreaking because we may never get there.
But, I won't know if we have funding or not for another couple of weeks and in that time, I'm more or less unemployed. Which means anything I had planned for the future has been canceled and that includes coming home for Christmas. Who knows, maybe this whole thing will blow over in another week, but if it doesn't I'm looking at months of job interviews.
On a brighter note, it means I have absolutely no reason not to do NaNoWriMo this year. |

| Time to catch up on all that writing you've been procrastinating on at least? Hope the funding comes through or you find something else you actually like... |

doh...
If it helps, it's not just small companies. All state agencies have furloughs going on this year, and on top of that, my hours just got cut back more at the museum as well. Sorry that you have the forced stay at home indefinitely thing though. That really sucks. |

| Um, I do actually like this job. It's probably the best programming job I'm going to find. |
|
| Crappy! But I know the feeling. After almost two years of looking for a weekday job, I have one that is only 2 months and two weeks long. Hardly enough to pay off some loans, but more than enough for Christmas! Which I won't even get off this year because I have to work Christmas night. Does this mean that Thanksgiving is out too? |
|
| Thanksgiving has been off for a while now. |
|
| so is anyone going to georgia for thanksgiving? I'm so out of the loop. |
|
| As far as I know, it was called off completely. |
